Backpack care guide

Both Feyholt backpacks are built to last for years, but the two fabrics need different care. Waxed canvas is renewed with wax; coated nylon is kept clean and dry. The steps below take less than an hour a year.

Re-waxing the P5

  1. Brush off dry dirt with a soft brush. Do not wash waxed canvas in a machine or with soap.
  2. Warm the tin of re-waxing compound in a bowl of hot water for five minutes so the wax softens.
  3. Rub a thin layer into the canvas with a lint-free cloth, working on one panel at a time. Pay most attention to the base, the top and the edges.
  4. Warm the waxed panels with a hair dryer on a medium setting until the wax disappears into the fabric.
  5. Hang the bag in a cool room for 24 hours before using it.

Cleaning the P6

  • Wipe the outer nylon with a damp cloth and a little mild soap; rinse with a clean damp cloth.
  • Turn the roll-top out and wipe the welded liner. Leave the bag open to dry fully before rolling it again.
  • Do not use a pressure washer or a dryer. Heat can lift the welded seams.

Leather and zips

The vegetable-tanned leather on the P5 darkens with handling. Rub in a small amount of neutral leather balm twice a year to stop it drying out. Keep zips clean by brushing grit out of the teeth; if a zip feels stiff, run a dry candle along the teeth and open and close it a few times.

Storage

Store both bags empty, unrolled and loosely stuffed with paper in a dry cupboard. Waxed canvas kept folded for months can crack along the folds, and a damp bag stored closed will develop mildew.
